Abacus is a hand-held calculating device. Various types of calculating devices such as:
Counting Table
Counting Board
Counting Frame
Abacus
were used in many parts of the world because of their not so good numeration systems.
But
Bharat developed the best numeration system of the world and the
most comprehensive ganitha as well.
We also had the
best education process. The
Indian mental and memory skills were almost unsurpassed.
So Indians
never needed to use any counting device.
They do not need it EVEN TODAY.
Unfortunately, today's 'Bharaths' -the Indians- have
abandoned the traditional methods of teaching basic arithmetic.
As typical of them, they ape the 'West' and as a result the Indian children, along with the Western children, are gropping in the dark.
This situation is being
exploited by unscrupulous commercial interests.
Many 'abacus based programmes' are promoted as
KAAYA KALPAMs of maths capable of doing all types of wonders
like the toothpastes and energy drinks!
It is pathetic to see our children (and their parents) with these programmes.
I am really ashamed to say that all these 'education' companies are headquartered in NAMMA CHENNAI!
They claim to make every kid
into a super wiz-kid by exercising the lobes, layers and sides of the brain to increase memory, logic, problem solving, ....... - almost everything!
Very soon they will plant 'tables chips' on children's heads!!
Proposing to teach
Indian children the use of any gadget like Abacus is a retrograde step and in my mind it is almost a crime.
Magic Maths has nothing to do with the Abacus.
Indians never needed the abacus, NOT EVEN NOW.

VEDIC MATHS
With due respects to everyone, what is today popularly being talked about as Vedic Maths is:
- Neither from the Vedas
- Nor Mathematics
1.This work is just
about 50 years old.
It is claimed to be the work of
H. H. Swami Krishna Thirthaji (1884-1960 A.D.) of Puri Govardhan Peeth.
Swami Krishna Thirthaji
(1884-1960 A.D.)
This image of the Swamiji is from the inside cover of the book
'
Vedic Mathematics'- M/s Banarsidas Publications.
How does this 50 years old work become Vedic?
2. This 'Vedic maths' taught, presently, to school children comprises of a
few sutras which are interpretted and used in
selective conditions and situations 'for fast calculations'.
How does a few manipulation techniques become 'mathematics'?
If this stuff is called Vedic Maths, then how would you call
the
Sulba Sutras that are dated to be
2500 to 3000 years old?
What about the meterial in
Bhaksaali Manuscript which is dated to be at least about
1600 years old?
The list continues ...
Magicmaths has nothing to do with this pseudo Vedic Maths stuff.
